Interview with Joe Arechavala
Author Joseph Arechavala is a member of the South Jersey Writers Group and has submitted the story: Destiny in Dusty Springfield to the Tall Tales and Short Stories from South Jersey Anthology.
Joe, tell us a little about yourself?
My life is really very boring. I’m
just a working stiff who’s a married father with two sons.
What got you interested in writing and when did you start?
I took up painting in 1998, but
started writing in 2000 as a way to vent my creative urges when I couldn’t find
time—or space to paint. I quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing and
joined a writing group.
What type of stories do you enjoy writing?
By default I’ve wound up writing
mostly horror/fantasy stories, but occasionally I’ll write something else.
Where do you get your inspiration for your stories?
A concept or idea forms in my
head—perhaps only a few lines or a scene—and I build on that. My first novel
coming out next year started out as a short story.
Why did you pick this particular story for our anthology?
Well, my horror work didn’t seem
to fit and I thought “Destiny” would make for a good read and generate some
laughs.
What advice can you give to our readers who are interested in writing
and getting their book published?
Work hard, hone your craft by
reading and writing, and above all else, be persistent. And steel yourself for
lots of rejection letters.
Is it important for new writers to join a writer’s group and why?
I think it is. Being around other
writers is like a symphony orchestra; it helps you work on your craft and get
valuable feedback from others and understand the technical aspects of writing.
And above all, I believe being around other creative people helps one be more
creative.
